The artist Willem Frederik Noordijk (Schiedam 1887-1970) was already active as a draftsman and painter from an early age on, because of his interest in nature. However, at the age of 27 he managed to obtain a subsidy for young artists, which made it possible for him to follow a thorough education at the Hague Academy of Visual Arts from 1914 to 1917. Here, he was educated by the artist Frits Jansen, among others. Noordijk is best known for his depictions of expansive landscapes and intimate village- and cityscapes. During his travels to France, Spain, Italy and England he developed an impressionistic painting style, with a special sense of color. Noordijk eventually settled in the Dutch Gooi region, where many painters resided and worked. Here he took part in various exhibitions of the 'Gooische painters' association'. In addition, his work was shown during an exhibition of the St. Lucas in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Today a number of his etchings are represented in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
