Leiden-based art photographer Kommer Hakkenbrak (b. 1953) draws his inspiration from the richness of art history and the many journeys he undertakes around the world. Fascinated by the magic of photography from an early age, he has built an extensive body of painterly photographic art, each work radiating a distinctive, serene beauty. This effect is enhanced by carefully selected — often antique — frames and high-quality prints on Hahnemühle rag paper, elevating photography into an enchanting art form.
His atmospheric compositions transport you back in time: reminiscent of Old Masters on the wall, yet reimagined for the present day. The remarkable, natural, and entirely unedited interplay of light and shadow seen in all his works recalls the mood of painting from centuries past.
In his series L’Orient est rouge, for example, Hakkenbrak draws inspiration from 19th-century Orientalist painters. Each artwork is produced in a limited edition, making Kommer’s Old Master photography a truly distinctive art object for any interior.
